Merced County Authorities Investigate Fatal Shooting in Winton; Victim Identified

WINTON, CA — “On April 27, 2025, at approximately 12:51 a.m., deputies from the Merced County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the 7300 block of Gertrude Avenue in Winton following reports of multiple individuals being shot.
Upon arrival, deputies located three victims suffering from gunshot wounds scattered across the area. Immediate lifesaving efforts were initiated. One victim, identified as 17-year-old Carlos Ramirez Chaidez of Winton, sustained a gunshot wound to the thigh and was critically injured. Deputies applied a tourniquet prior to emergency medical services arriving on scene. The victim was initially transported with the intent of being airlifted; however, due to the victim’s unstable condition, he was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased at 3:01 a.m.
The two additional victims, a 17-year-old male and a 19-year-old male, each sustained gunshot wounds to the lower extremities. The 17-year-old male has since been treated and released from the hospital in stable condition. The 19-year-old male remains hospitalized, and is in stable condition as well.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the victims did not know each other and were attending a party in the area. Witness statements suggest that an unknown number of suspects, possibly traveling in a white sedan, drove by and opened fire on a group gathered outside the residence. Witnesses also reported hearing gang-related slurs immediately prior to the shooting, and investigators believe the incident may be gang-related.
At this time, no suspects or persons of interest have been identified. Detectives are actively canvassing the area for additional evidence and surveillance video.
The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone who attended the party and witnessed the shooting, or anyone with information regarding this incident, is urged to contact Detective Jose Ramirez at (209) 322-0003. Callers may remain anonymous.”
