NOVATO — Marin County Sheriff’s Office detectives arrested a man suspected of internet financial fraud. Detectives arrested the suspect when he arrived at a Taco Bell restaurant on Rowland Boulevard. It seems he was attempting to steal more money from a little old lady.

Hao Canh Diep, 36, of Rosemead, allegedly stole $30,000 from an 83-year-old Marin County resident under false pretenses. Pretending to be bank employees, online scammers convinced the victim to withdraw $30,000 from her account.

In a prepared statement the Marin County Sheriff’s Office said. “Scammers instructed the resident to provide the money to their representative, who would meet her at her home. An adult male arrived at the resident’s home in a white Prius and took her money.”

The victim of financial fraud soon realized that she was tricked. After reporting what happened, another meeting was arranged between her and the suspect. This time the suspect told the victim to bring $25,000 to Taco Bell, where detectives waited for the suspect.

“Detectives developed a plan to surveil the location where the scammers wanted the resident to deliver the money,” the statement said. “Detectives observed the suspect arrive in his white Toyota Prius.”

Diep was arrested on March 27 at 3:36 p.m. The suspect is presently ineligible for release on bond. Diep faces open felony charges for grand theft, and theft/embezzlement of an elder/dependent adult. Diep who normally delivers food for Uber Eats is now taking his meals at Marin County Jail.
