Fatal Hit-and-Run Collision in Salinas Leads to Arrest of Suspect

Last night, just after 11:14 pm, a vehicle collision with injuries occurred near the intersection of N. Sanborn Rd. and Freedom Parkway, prompting immediate response from law enforcement officers. Initial reports indicated an individual fleeing the scene shortly after the crash, though only minimal details were available regarding their description.
Upon their arrival, responding officers discovered two significantly damaged vehicles. One was found empty, while the other contained two occupants. Despite prompt life-saving efforts by officers and medical personnel, the driver of the second vehicle was declared deceased at the location. The passenger sustained serious injuries and was promptly transported to NMC, where they are listed in critical condition.
Further investigation revealed that the deceased was operating as an Uber driver, providing transportation to the critically injured passenger via the ride-sharing application when the accident took place.
The suspect, initially absent from the scene, was not identified until the subsequent morning hours following a thorough investigation led by the SPD motor unit and patrol officers. Juan Manuel Gonzalez, aged 27, was apprehended and faces charges of vehicular manslaughter and felony hit and run.
