PINOLE— A suspect apprehended faces multiple charges involving a one-day crime spree that occurred in Pinole. Demetrius Chafford, 21, of Fairfield, is in custody ineligible for release on bond. Chafford allegedly shot two persons, robbed a cash register, stole a purse, and attempted three carjackings.

Chafford is implicated in the spree of crimes that started December 27, shortly before 12:30 p.m. Police responded to a Chevron gas station at 2695 Pinole Valley Road. Officers found two gunshot victims who were transported to a hospital for medical treatment and released.

Meanwhile the suspect had fled towards a nearby Jack in the Box restaurant. Officers found Chafford under a nearby Interstate 80 bridge, where he was placed under arrest. He remains at the Martinez Detention Facility, awaiting his next court appearance on January 10th.

Investigators learned that the suspect attempted to make a purchase at the Chevron station convenience store. After his transaction was declined, Chafford allegedly ripped the cash register from the counter and fled. Next, he allegedly smashed a car window and stole a purse, before he allegedly attempted a carjacking in the parking lot.

Two persons intervened when they saw the suspect struggling with a woman for her purse. She was knocked to the ground and both persons who intervened were shot. While fleeing on foot from the area, Chafford allegedly attempted two more carjackings. A firearm that he allegedly discarded in bushes, was later recovered as evidence.

Charges filed against Chafford include attempted murder, assault with a semiautomatic firearm, second degree robbery, and attempted carjacking.
