Woman Arrested on Suspicion of Attempted Murder in Alleged Box Cutter Attack

A Mendocino County woman has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after allegedly attacking another individual with a box cutter.

According to a press release by the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office, the Ukiah Police Department responded on the morning of December 19 to a call regarding a potential stabbing victim on the 1200 block of North State Street.

Upon their arrival at the scene, officers discovered that the victim had sustained injuries consistent with an assault involving an edged weapon. Officers learned that the alleged assault had actually occurred on the 1300 block of North State Street, putting the matter under the jurisdiction of the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies assumed control of the scene and investigation. The victim, described as a 56-year-old woman, had reportedly been staying as a guest in a residence owned by Remelee Guerrero Laxa, 51, for several days. For reasons unknown, Laxa allegedly attacked the woman with a box cutter, causing severe injuries. Evidence of a disturbance and assault was found at the scene.

Deputies also discovered that Laxa was on formal probation in Mendocino County.

Deputies soon thereafter located and arrested Laxa on suspicion of attempted murder and probation violation. She was booked at the Mendocino County jail, where she is to remain without bail.

The victim received medical attention for her injuries. The investigation remains active and ongoing.

It was unclear at press time whether Laxa had retained an attorney.
