Man Arrested on Suspicion of Murder is Charged for Involuntary Manslaughter

OAKLAND— A 23-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder is now charged for involuntary manslaughter. The suspect Malik Jelks is being held in custody at Alameda County Santa Rita Jail in lieu of $200,000 bond. He claims he was not aiming a firearm when the victim was fatally shot.

Jelks was arrested on August 28 at 11:30 a.m. His arrest is the culmination of an investigation conducted by Oakland police homicide investigators with help from the U.S. Marshals Service.

The Oakland Police Department in a prepared statement said. “Jelks was safely taken into custody in Antioch.”

Jelks, a resident of Oakland, was wanted for an outstanding warrant on suspicion of murder. He was later booked into the county lockup on August 29th at 5:08 a.m.

The victim 17-year-old Jemilen Enoch, of Oakland, was pronounced dead by paramedics. The suspect and victim were socializing according to the suspect when the shooting happened. Jelks claims that he was not aiming at the victim when the gun went off.

Enoch died on March 19 shortly before 9:30 p.m. at his home in an East Oakland neighborhood. Responding officers found him suffering from a gunshot wound at a residence on the 1000 block of 82nd Avenue.
