BERKELEY—Gregory D. Grove, a 43-year-old homeless man, says he breaks windows to vent his anger. Grove was placed under arrest for a window smashing rampage in the tony Elmwood dining/shopping district.

Witnesses reported seeing a disturbed man walking north along College Avenue. He was passing boutiques and restaurants, carrying a metal pole, and breaking the windows of parked cars.

The sound of this glass shattering startled pedestrians on May 2. Eight victims would later discover their windows were broken. Vehicle interiors and sidewalks were littered with broken glass along College Avenue.

It was shortly after 4 p.m. when Berkeley PD started receiving reports about the window smashing spree. Officers rushed to the scene. Grove was stopped near the intersection of College Avenue and Russell Street.

Grove reportedly told the police that he broke the car windows because he felt angry. He was arrested at 4:45 p.m. and transported to the county lockup in Dublin. Grove is now being housed and fed at Alameda County Santa Rita Jail in lieu of $10,000 bond.

Grove was charged May 3 for felony vandalism PC 594(A). His preliminary hearing is scheduled May 17 at Rene C. Davidson Alameda County Courthouse in Oakland.

The same homeless man has previous arrests for disorderly conduct, animal cruelty seven times, and possession of a controlled substance. Grove also has prior convictions for battery, and cruelly wounding an animal.
