Authorities in Santa Cruz County recently arrested a DUI suspect whom they say had also been transporting sugar gliders, which are classified as a restricted animal.

In a press release on Wednesday, March 1, Santa Cruz CHP shared details of an arrest which occurred earlier this week on Monday, February 27.

CHP officers had responded to a report of a crash and arrested the responsible party on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Officers then discovered that the driver had also been transporting two sugar gliders, which are small nocturnal marsupials related to kangaroos and koalas.

The sugar gliders were placed in the care of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the CHP said.
