RICHMOND — A former teacher investigated by multiple law enforcement agencies has been charged for allegedly sexually abusing minors. The suspect was returning from Hawaii when she was taken into custody at Sacramento International Airport.

Anessa M. Gower, 35, taught biology at the Making Waves Academy charter school, located on Lakeside Drive in Richmond. Gower was arrested on April 6. She was taken into custody by the Richmond Police Department with assistance from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.

Following a preliminary inquiry conducted by the school, authorities were notified, and Gower is no longer employed at the school. She allegedly contacted and arranged to meet with minors with intent for sex.

Gower is accused of engaging in sexual acts with minors during 2021 and this year. Investigators obtained numerous statements from victims and witnesses.

Gower is accused of statutory rape, lewd acts with a child under 14, and multiple counts of child molestation. She also allegedly sent sexually graphic materials to children while trying to seduce them.

The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office has filed 29 charges against Gower, pertaining to sexual abuse. The case against her involves seven minors. Gower presently remains in custody at the Martinez Detention Facility in lieu of $2 million bond.

A statement released by the Richmond Police Department says: “This was an excellent collaborative effort by multiple agencies, including Richmond PD officers and detectives.”
