“On Thursday, March 31 st , 2022, at 11:30 pm, a reporting party contacted the Sheriff’s Office to report a gunshot victim in the 3800 block of Pancake Hill, in the City of Shasta Lake.

The reporting party advised she and Dwight Stewart Honeycutt (58 years old) returned home and found the victim inside their residence. The victim was known to them as they are neighbors and had used controlled substances together earlier in the day. An argument ensued and Honeycutt shot the victim inside the residence. The victim was transported via ambulance for medical treatment but later died from his injuries.

Honeycutt agreed to provide a statement to Detectives at the Major Crimes Unit. Honeycutt, a convicted felon and a registered sex offender, who is prevented from possessing firearms made admissions to possessing an illegal sawed-off shotgun. Honeycutt revealed he shot the unarmed victim out of anger because the victim made advances toward his girlfriend.

On April 1 st , 2022 at 0656 hours, Honeycutt was arrested and booked into the Shasta County Jail for 187(a) PC (Murder), 29800(a) PC (Prohibited person possessing a firearm) & 33215 PC (Possession of a short-barreled shotgun). The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Honeycutt’s bail is set at $1,000,000 and arraignment is scheduled for Tuesday, April 5 th , 2022 at 1:30 pm in the Shasta County Superior Court. The victim’s autopsy has been scheduled.
