“On January 19, 2022, a South Lake Tahoe jury found Edgar Bringas-Zavala guilty of forcible rape, two acts of domestic violence with injury, false imprisonment and criminal threats with an enhancement for the use of a knife. The jury deliberated for approximately 45 minutes.

At the jury trial, which lasted roughly three weeks, the victim courageously testified to the brutal attack by her then boyfriend, Mr. Bringas-Zavala, in the summer of 2020. Over a two day period, Mr. Bringas-Zavala strangled, smothered, and beat the victim. In addition, he cut her with scissors and threatened to kill her with a butcher knife. The attack culminated in Mr. Bringas-Zavala cutting the victim’s clothes off and forcibly raping her.

Mr. Bringas-Zavala is a career woman-abuser and has served multiple prison sentences for his crimes. At the trial, four of Mr. Bringas-Zavalas’ prior victims bravely testified and explained their own violent encounters with him and how they eventually broke the cycle of violence.

Mr. Bringas-Zavala is facing a life sentence in this case because he has, at least, two prior strike convictions.

The case was presided over by the Honorable Suzanne Kingsbury. The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Kassie Cardullo and investigated by the District Attorney’s Office and the South Lake Tahoe Police Department. A special thank you goes to DA Investigator Ken Barber who is the assigned investigating officer in the case.

Mr. Bringas-Zavala will be sentenced on February 18, 2022 at 1:30 pm.”
