“In early July, the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office was made aware of concerning conduct involving one of our own. An internal investigation was immediately initiated, and Correctional Officer Alex Tafoya was placed on Administrative Leave per department policy. Based on the findings of our investigation, the case was forwarded to the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office for their review.

Mr. Tafoya has been charged with the following:

PC 287(c)(2)(a) Oral copulation by force

PC 289(a)(1)(A) Sexual penetration by force

PC 237 False imprisonment by violence, fraud, or deceit

PC 149 Assault by a police officer

As with any of our citizens, everyone is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. When allegations of this nature are brought to our attention, we take them extremely seriously. Conduct of this nature is a dishonor to our Office, the Oath that we take, and the badge that we wear. As always, we will continue to do everything we can to ensure the safety of the citizens of San Joaquin County.

At his arraignment today, Mr. Tafoya was remanded into custody and will remain in jail until and throughout his trial.”
