“San Mateo, CA – On Sunday September 26, 2021 at 3:23 p.m., San Mateo Police Department dispatchers heard a vehicle honking outside the police department and saw two vehicles driving erratically into the parking lot of the police department. A Mercedes followed a Lexus until the Lexus stopped at the vestibule.  Once stopped at the vestibule, the two occupants of the Lexus exited and entered the vestibule for assistance.  Then the Mercedes quickly fled the parking lot.

SMPD launched an investigation.  Officers learned the driver of the Mercedes, who was later identified as Kenneth Roberts, pointed a firearm at the occupants of the Lexus and then chased them to the police department.  Officers attempted to locate the suspect but were unsuccessful; a county-wide broadcast of the suspect and suspect vehicle was distributed.

Additionally, SMPD learned Roberts had two outstanding felony warrants: one for receiving stolen property and felony reckless evading (496(D)(A) PC & 2800.2(a) CVC) and the other for driving on a suspended license and felony reckless evading (14601.1(a) CVC & 2800.2(a) CVC).

Approximately an hour later, one of the victims called SMPD to report that Roberts just left the 1700 block of Pierce Street in San Mateo after pointing a gun at the victim, forcing his way into the residence, and demanding the victim’s backpack.

Again, Roberts fled prior to the arrival of SMPD officers.  At approximately 8:26 p.m., the other victim returned to SMPD and stated that Roberts followed her to SMPD but was currently in a parking lot across the street. Officers conducted an area check but did not locate Roberts.

The investigation continued and SMPD obtained a million-dollar warrant for Roberts’ arrest.  SMPD coordinated with additional law enforcement agencies to execute the arrest warrant shortly after Roberts attended a funeral in Daly City, CA.

On September 30, 2021, with the assistance of the Daly City Police Department and Broadmoor Police Department, Roberts was safely arrested.  SMPD authored a search warrant for Roberts’ vehicle.  The search of the vehicle yielded a loaded Polymer80 9mm unserialized firearm, a loaded Glock 27 .40 cal, (2) high capacity magazines, over .25lbs of suspected methamphetamine, drug sales evidence, and marijuana.  Later, the San Mateo Police Department transported Roberts to San Mateo County and booked him into custody.
