“RIVERSIDE, CA – On Wednesday, September 8, 2021, at approximately 11:10 a.m., the City of Riverside’s Public Safety Communications Center received a call of a theft in-progress occurring at the JC Penney, located at the Galleria at Tyler in the 1200 block of Galleria at Tyler.
It was reported that two male suspects had entered the business and smashed the locked glass display counters with a sledgehammer and stole gold jewelry. The two men then fled the store towards a residential neighborhood to the rear of the shopping center.⁣
The first responding officer arrived quickly and put out a description of the suspects over the radio for patrol units and our Air Support Unit (Air-1), who quickly saturated the area. Air-1 located the suspects in a nearby neighborhood and saw them discarding items into a trashcan. Officers quickly responded to that location and safely took the two suspects into custody. The stolen jewelry, with an estimated value of $170,000, was located inside their getaway vehicle which was parked nearby.⁣
Adan Martinez-Carvajal 23-years-old of Upland and Melchor Roquin Cabalar, 22-years-old of West Covina, were arrested and booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center for grand theft, conspiracy to commit a crime, and burglary. They were later released on $10,000 bail.⁣
Martinez-Carvajal and Cabalar are wanted in connection with nine other similar crimes they committed in Las Vegas, Bakersfield, Victorville, Montclair , and West Covina.⁣
