Modesto man identified as primary suspect in fatal double-shooting

A Modesto man has been arrested in connection to a recent double shooting that killed one man and wounded another, police said.

Officers responded in the early morning hours of Sunday, March 7, to the area of Coffee Road and East Orangeburg Avenue, where a man had reportedly been shot. After finding an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound, officers heard screaming the area of East Coolidge Avenue and Water Street, where they found a second man who’d also been shot.

Despite life-saving measures, the second man died of his injuries at the scene. He was later identified as 23-year-old Clive Wilsonstewart of Merced.

The man found at Coffee and East Orangeburg, whose identity police have not released, was taken to hospital by ambulance.

By that afternoon, police had identified and arrested 21-year-old John McDonald III as the primary suspect. Police say the gun believed to have been used in the shootings has also been recovered.
