“Officers responded to a call of a vehicle colliding into the Breadbox Rec Center on N. Sanborn Road. Several witnesses called in stating that the driver of the vehicle had fled the scene.
A witness was able to keep an eye on the driver and give our Dispatchers updates on his direction of travel. Officers were able to contact the driver, Alfonso Ortiz Islas (38), at the intersection of N. Sanborn Road and E. Laurel Drive.
He was detained. Several witnesses were able to positively identify Islas as the driver that left the scene. Officers conducted a DUI investigation and Islas had a BAC of .18. He was on probation for a prior DUI and had a suspended drivers license.
The vehicle, a 2001 Mustang, first struck the MST bus stop structure, then a bicycle rack, and then into the front roll-up doors of the Breadbox. There was no structural damage to the building.
Suspect Islas was lodged into the Monterey County Jail for DUI, Hit and Run Charges, Probation Violation, and driving on a suspended license.
The Salinas Police Department appreciates the teamwork we received from our community members. #teamwork #onecommunity.”
