Man Arrested in Connection with Fatal Supermarket Shooting

SAN JOSE — A man suspected of fatally shooting another man inside an eastside supermarket was arrested last weekend. The suspect was apprehended and detained by a security guard until police arrived.

The victim was shot inside Chavez Supermarket, located at 2327 McKee Road. San Jose police responded to a report of the shooting at 3:53 p.m. on March 22.

Responding officers took custody of the suspect from the security guard. The 33-year-old victim was found lying on the floor near the meat counter. He suffered at least one gunshot wound.

The victim was transported to a hospital one block away, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

A preliminary investigation revealed there was a brief interaction between the suspect and victim. Apparently, the victim remarked about marks on the suspect’s neck, which greatly angered the suspect.

An argument between the two men ensued. It escalated until finally the suspect produced a firearm and shot the victim.

The suspect attempted to flee but he didn’t get far. He was chased and pinned down by a security guard.

The suspect identified as 19-year-old Antonio Llabres of San Jose was booked into Santa Clara County Jail. Llabres presently is facing charges for murder.

It was illegal for the suspect to even possess a weapon because he was previously hospitalized for mental health evaluation.
