A Butte County man was arrested on suspicion of negligent discharge of a firearm after a reported fight with his mother at the Motel 6 in Chico.

Just after 6:30 PM on Wednesday, March 4, police received a call from motel staff about a physical fight between a mother and her adult son, 29-year-old Michael Sans Cartier-Ward.

Authorities say Ward’s mother had brought him to the motel to rent him a room for the night. Upon arrival, Ward tried to steal the car keys but his mother took them and fled into the front office.

Ward reportedly followed her inside, armed with an allegedly stolen handgun, then went back outside and fired four shots.

Responding police officers found him inside the nearby Denny’s restaurant, which was quickly evacuated, and took him into custody. The firearm was never found.

Ward was booked on suspicion of negligent discharge of a firearm and being a drug addict in possession of a firearm.
