RED BLUFF – Around 1:00 a.m. on February 19th officers with the Red Bluff Police Department responded to the Meadow Vista Apartments at 701 Vista Way on the report of an altercation.

Officers responded and were summarily shot at by a male suspect. One of the officers responded back with gunfire and struck the suspect.

38-year-old Alex Francisco Vazquez lay on the ground, still clutching his gun. He did not comply with the officers orders and for more than 90 minutes ineffective negotiations ensued.

The RBPD reports that “Eventually, a four-officer team used a ballistic shield in an attempt to diffuse the situation, take the male into custody, and render medical aid.”

But instead Vazquez tried to shoot at the officers, and Vazquez was hit again by more gunfire.

This time he was apprehended and taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

Vazquez “was actively being sought by the FBI for a federal warrant alleging “Possession with Intent to Distribute a Controlled Substance (Title 21 U.S.C. 841(a)(1).” The warrant listed Vazquez as “Armed and Dangerous.”

The three officers involved in the shooting are, as is standard procedure, on paid administrative leave as the investigation continues.
