The theft of catalytic converters is a problem in most any county, Here, the Palm Springs Police Department in Riverside County issues a public service announcement about this crime –
“Over the past year, Palm Springs has seen an increase in thefts of catalytic converter. A catalytic converter is typically installed underneath most vehicles and is part of the vehicle’s emissions system.
When a catalytic converter is removed, the vehicle will sound like the muffler has been removed and the vehicle’s dashboard may display an alert indicating something is wrong with the vehicle. Victims of this type of theft suffer replacement costs of around $1,000.
These parts are commonly taken from trucks, RV’s and vans in various areas of the city. Due to the increase of these incidents, we are currently seeking the public’s assistance.
If you have information related to the theft of catalytic converters or if you have become a victim of this type of theft, please contact the Palm Springs Police Department at 760-778-8406. Anonymous information can also be provided to Crime Stoppers at 760-341-7867.
There are ways to protect your vehicle. There are after-market locks available for purchase, if possible park your vehicle in a secured garage and utilize surveillance equipment if available.
The Palm Springs Police Department would also like to take this opportunity to remind vehicle owners to lock their vehicles, not to leave valuables in plain sight and not leave keys inside the vehicle. These types of prevention efforts could drastically reduce your chances of becoming a victim.”
