HUMBOLDT HILL – The man who crashed into a home on the night of June 28th and killed a man in his bed has convictions for speeding and hit-and-run with property damage.

It was Ryder Stapp’s 25th birthday, as he allegedly drove drunk down Humboldt Hill Road.

His Ford F250 pickup struck a home where 64-year-old Robert Beland lay in bed. Beland later died at the hospital from his injuries.

Stapp posted $175,000 bail on June 29, twelve hours later.

California Highway Patrol reports that Stapp tried to run away form the wreck at first, but residents stopped him and held him until officers arrived.
