CONTRA COSTA COUNTY — A parolee was arrested the same day as a dead man’s body was found at a city park. On April 14th, Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office deputies found the body at Anuta Park off Willow Pass Road in Bay Point.

Authorities believe that Joshua Johnson, 27 of Pittsburg, is responsible for the man’s death.

The 35-year-old victim, Chukwuemeka Onyeagucha of Pittsburg, was unconscious and not breathing when first responders arrived at the scene. Despite efforts by paramedics to save him, Onyeagucha was pronounced dead at Anuta Park.

This much is known – Sheriff’s deputies and paramedics responded to a medical call at 12:26 p.m. Then detectives from the homicide unit and crime lab took over this ongoing investigation to determine what happened.

Apparently, the suspect and victim knew each other. At this point, authorities believe the men had a dispute that turned deadly for some reason.

Authorities moved quickly to make an arrest. For expediency, authorities bypassed the district attorney’s office and obtained a Ramey warrant from a judge to arrest Johnson. He was taken into custody at 11:10 p.m. and transported to the Martinez Detention Facility.

On April 17th detectives presented the case to the district attorney’s office. Presently, Johnson faces one count of assault with a deadly weapon likely to produce great bodily injury.

However, authorities are continuing to investigate this case. Anyone with information can call the sheriff’s office at 925-646-2441, or email tips@so.cccounty.us.
