BERKELEY — A man was arrested on suspicion of committing two sexual assaults in separate incidents last month—on a high school girl and a student at the University of California at Berkeley.

Berkeley police arrested the suspect Alfonzo L. McInnis at 2:15 p.m. on May 3, not far from where he lives, and not far from where he allegedly assaulted his victims on normally quiet tree-lined streets.

The first victim, a teenage minor was walking along a residential street on the 1500 block of Addison Street, sometime between 11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on April 19, when a man grabbed onto her and pulled her into someone’s sideyard garden and then sexually assaulted her.

The second victim, a young woman was attacked at 4:30 a.m. on April 28 near the intersection of College Avenue and Channing Way.

She was chased to the entryway of a university dormitory, where the armed suspect attempted to drag her off the street and into nearby residents’ yards—until she broke free from him, only to be attacked again by him outside another dormitory where she lives. Fortunately, the woman escaped him again and safely entered her dorm.

Her second struggle with the suspect was recorded by a surveillance camera outside the dormitory building, which the University of California at Berkeley police shared with the Berkeley Police Department, which ultimately led to their arrest of McInnis on the 1900 block of University Avenue.

McInnis is being held at custody at the Berkeley City Jail, charged with possession of a machine gun, kidnapping, forcible rape, forcible oral copulation and sexual penetration by force. He was also charged with parole violation and bail has been denied.
