OAKLAND, CA — Police recently arrested two men involved in a shooting near Oakland City Hall, and a
third suspect remains at large.

Derrick R. Johnson, 28, and Lamont Williams, 51,were taken
to an area hospital for treatment, where they were subsequently arrested. Johnson is a shooting suspect and
Williams is an assault suspect.

The shooting occurred on May 6 at approximately 4:30 p.m. It happened at Frank H. Ogawa
Plaza, Broadway and 14th Street, adjacent to city hall. Both men are Oakland residents who
reportedly know each other.

Oakland officers in the vicinity heard the gunfire and responded. “It appears the two suspects
got into an argument that escalated to a shooting,” Oakland police said in a prepared
statement.

Johnson evidently approached Williams who was with a group.. A confrontation
erupted and Williams allegedly struck Johnson with a chair. Next, Johnson allegedly shot
Williams who suffered a gunshot wound in his abdomen.

As Johnson was trying to run away from the area, he was shot in the leg by a third
unidentified person. This third suspect is being sought by police.

After being released from the hospital, Johnson was transported to Alameda County Santa
Rita Jail. Johnson was booked May 7 on suspicion of assault with a firearm, carrying a loaded
firearm, and making threats of violence. Johnson remains in custody in lieu of $150,000 bond,
pending arraignment.

Williams is suspected of assault with a weapon other than a firearm. The investigation is
ongoing. Anyone with information can contact the Oakland police felony assault unit at 510-
