Murder Charge in Long Beach Shooting

Jason Monroe Daniels

Man shot in front of 6-year-old boy

LONG BEACH — On April 19, 33-year-old Jason Monroe Daniels went to his ex-girlfriend’s family home on the 500 block of Cherry Avenue.

Apparently Daniels became upset when he saw 38-year-old William Luther Hayes playing with the 6-year-old son of his ex-girlfriend.

The suspect went outside and approached Hayes, and shot him in the torso as the boy looked on.  Although he was taken to the hospital, Hayes died from his gunshot wound.

Two weeks later, US Marshalls arrested Daniels in Las Vegas and returned him to California.

Charges against Daniels include murder, child abuse and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Daniels has previous convictions for a concealed firearm (2004), corporal injury to a child’s parent (2007) and assault with a firearm and threats (2014).

Prosecutors have requested that bail be set at $4.28 million.
