UNION CITY — A domestic dispute took a turn for the worse on Friday afternoon. Lawrence Pollard, Jr., 31, of Oakland, is accused of trying to run over his wife, but when that didn’t work, he allegedly drove away with her and pushed her out of a moving car instead.

With the assistance of Oakland police, Union City police arrested Pollard at 9:39 a.m., after the abandoned car was located on the 9400 block of E Street in Oakland, and his wife was taken to a hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Pollard is charged with being under the influence of a controlled substance and driving under the influence of drugs, kidnapping, first degree robbery, inflicting corporal injury on a spouse and child cruelty. He is being held at Santa Rita Jail for $350,000 bail.

Union City police initially responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon at the parking lot of O’Reilly Auto Parts, 1601 Decoto Road, where a caller reported a man was trying to run over a woman. While police were investigating, a second call came in reporting that a man pushed a woman out of moving car, on Mission Boulevard, near Tamarack Drive.

Police located the woman, who told police that she was a victim of domestic violence. The suspect had fled the scene, taking with him her four-year-old son (his stepson).

Pollard was soon located and police said he provided differing accounts concerning the whereabouts of the child, but eventually told them that he’d left the boy with an elderly relative. The boy was found was safe, but taken into protective custody for his safety.
