Moriarty Brothers Busted for Insurance Fraud

Neal and Ross Moriarty

SAN LUIS OBISPO — While off duty, 38-year-old Cal Fire Captain Neal Moriarty hit a deer while driving his vehicle on the 101 freeway. At this time he was both uninjured… and uninsured.

Neal contacted his brother, 42-year-old Ross Moriarty, who was a licensed insurance agent. Between the two of them, they came up with a plan — Ross reinstated Neal’s insurance and they falsified the timeline of the accident.

Based on this new, and false, information, they submitted a claim of $13,709 in order to repair Neal’s vehicle.

Insurance investigators became suspicious and asked for phone records.  They failed to provide said records and, one month later, withdrew the claim.

However, it was too late to withdraw charges of insurance fraud.  The brothers were each booked (Neal into Santa Cruz jail and Ross into San Luis Obispo County jail). Bail was set at $120,000 each, a larger bill than the original repair fees.

Arraignment is set for August 10th.
