Suspect Shot by Officers Near High School Identified

Sawon Samboon

FRESNO – The 25-year-old man who was shot by Fresno police officers early Sunday after allegedly running from officers with a gun in his hand was identified as Sawon Samboon.

The incident happened on Sunday around 12:20 a.m. near Wishon and Vassar avenues when officers saw a car going the wrong way and tried to pull over the driver. Police say the driver did not pull over but instead sped away. He crashed at the corner of Wilson and Clinton avenues with police still in pursuit, authorities said.

The driver, now identified by police as Samboon, jumped out of the car and began running southeast while carrying a handgun, authorities said. He was in the area of Fresno High School.

The officers chased after Samboon and ordered him to drop his weapon, but he failed to comply with their commands, and the officers opened fire, striking Samboon several times, police said.

An ambulance took Samboon, who has several previous arrests and claimed an affiliation with a Southeast Asian gang the last time he was booked in jail, to Community Regional Medical Center, police said. He is now in stable condition.
