Man Arrested Minutes After Being Released from Jail

Alejandro Rorales Garcia

FRESNO – A man punched and kicked a woman just a few feet in front of the steps of the downtown jail from which he had just been released, leading to him being taken back into custody, police said.

Police said that 38-year-old Alejandro Rosales Garcia was released from the Fresno County Jail around 10:45 a.m. on March 18, after finishing his sentence for misdemeanor vandalism, possession of a controlled substance and possession of paraphernalia.

Just a few minutes after leaving the jail, Garcia allegedly was pushing people and shouting. Officers who arrived on the scene found an injured woman in need of an ambulance.

According to police, Garcia had said something to the woman in English but she only spoke Spanish. Garcia allegedly then began to shout at her and punch her, causing the woman to fall to the ground. Garcia then threatened a male bystander and then kicked the woman in the stomach twice, police said.

Garcia ran east on Fresno Street, but was captured near Divisadero and U streets, police said.

Authorities said the woman did not know Garcia and it is unclear as to why Garcia decided to attack her.

Garcia is now back in custody on charges of assault and battery.
