Police Arrest Clovis Man After Short Standoff

FRESNO – A man who allegedly threatened to kill his family members and shoot at police was arrested following a 1.5-hour standoff with law enforcement on Friday evening.

Officers with the Clovis Police Department responded to disturbance calls at a home on the 900 block of Harvard Avenue around 6 p.m. Upon arriving at the scene, they saw 48-year-old Ernest Martinez Jr. of Clovis standing in front of the house with a metal rod in his hand, authorities said.

Martinez went back inside and trashed the house, then yelled to police that he was going to burn the house down and shoot at the officers outside. Police were eventually able to arrest Martinez without further incident. They also rescued an elderly man and woman who were inside the house during the standoff, authorities said.

Martinez was booked into Fresno County Jail on allegations of elder abuse, threatening officers and vandalism.
