Two Unsuccessful Drug Smuggling Attempts at the Border

SAN YSIDRO – U.S Customs and Border Protection officials constantly maintain a watchful eye at the US/Mexican border, keeping a watchful eye out for any infractions of the law as swarms of humanity pass across to and fro.  Among the people they encounter are the would-be drug smugglers bent on the successful transport of their wares.

Two recent incidents underscore the need for vigilance.  Last Friday morning a drug dog alerted officials to something suspicious in the gas tank of a 1993 Ford pickup.  The 27-year-old driver was carrying 166 pounds of liquid meth and was arrested.

Then early on Monday morning, 126 pounds of crystallized and liquid meth were discovered in the gas tank of a 1972 pickup.  The 22-year-old driver and 19-year-old passenger were both arrested.  All 3 arrestees are US citizens.

Despite their failure to carry meth across the border, one wonders how many others make the same type of attempt….and succeed.
