Man Shot by Police After Shooting Rival, Endangering Baby

LOS ANGELES – In Willowbrook, a community north of Compton, police on Sunday night encountered an apparently distraught man who attempted to settle his issues  with a gun. The incident occurred at a residence on the 2400 block of East 126th Street.  The 43-year-old male confronted his ex-girlfriend and shot her new boyfriend in the face.

The shooter then left the scene in his car, taking his one-year-old son with him,  Police followed him in a pursuit that eventually returned to the residence on 126th Street.

Holding the baby in one hand and a revolver in the other, the suspect then tried unsuccessfully to enter a side door as well as the front door.  After each attempt he fired one shot in the direction of deputies, who did not return fire out of concern for the safety of the child.  Finally, the child was released and pulled inside the home, at which time deputies fired multiple times in response to the gunman pointing his revolver at them yet again.

The unnamed suspect is in critical condition.  The man he shot in the face is recovering in the hospital.
