That Much Cash and He Still Chose to Huff Gas

MONTEBELLO — If you had a wad of cash and decided to get high, would you elect to select the cheapest petrochemical available from a hobby shop to erase brain cells?

Alejandro Herrera, 43, was picked up by Montebello police for disorderly conduct owing to his apparently having ingested toluene. At the time of his arrest he was said to possess $656.70 in cash.

The street price for toluene is unknown to this journalist, but a four-liter glass bottle of the chemical from The Lab Depot, Inc. costs $38.24.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, “Toluene is added to gasoline, used to produce benzene, and used as a solvent… Chronic inhalation exposure of humans to toluene also causes irritation of the upper respiratory tract and eyes, sore throat, dizziness, and headache.” It’s clearly a hilarious inhalant that should be made available at all parties.

The Los Angeles resident — who claims to be a driver for Golden Mattress — was picked up along the 700 block of South 6th Street. Bail was set at $250.

If all goes well, Herrera can bail himself out and still have enough to buy a cheap motel room, another bottle of toluene and another similar arrest.
