Fresno Man Arrested for Killing Mother

FRESNO – A man was arrested outside of a convenience store on Thursday for allegedly fatally shooting his mother.

Javier Sanchez

Police say 29-year-old Javier Sanchez shot and killed his mother, 62-year-old Sylvia Valencia, just before 1 a.m. on Thursday at the home where they both lived at McKinley and Arthur avenues.

After allegedly shooting his mother, Sanchez then walked six blocks to a 7-11 on Palm and McKinley avenues and told the clerk what he had done. Police say Sanchez then waited for authorities to arrive on the scene and arrest him.

After Sanchez confessed to them, officers went to his home and found his mother inside, dead from gunshot wounds. Sanchez was booked into the Fresno County Jail for murder.

The shooting apparently happened after an argument between the mother and son, police said.

Sanchez has a criminal history, but it is not a violent one. He’s been arrested for driving under the influence, obstruction of justice and having illegal fireworks, according to officials.

This is Fresno’s 24th murder so far this year.
