Burglars Busted and Make Bail

Arrested After Chase Across Two Counties

Justin Tyler Steele, 25

Summerland – A residence on what is perhaps the quietest, most private and secure street in the sleepy seaside tourist destination of Summerland was the target of pre-dawn burglars on January 3rd.  A 911 Emergency call was received by Santa Barbara County Sheriffs Dispatch at 6:30 in the morning, and local area patrol units responded immediately to an address on Calle Culebra, a serpentine dead-end street whose Spanish name translates to “snake street.”

With a clear witness description of a car seen speeding away from the Summerland house broadcast over law enforcement airwaves, an SBSD patrol unit four miles south in Carpinteria spotted a car, according to SBSD Public Information Officer Kelly Hoover, “matching the description of the suspect vehicle.”  The patrol deputy made a traffic stop of the vehicle as it pulled onto U.S. Highway 101 southbound, but as he approached the car, “the driver accelerated and a pursuit was initiated,” Hoover reported to the media.

Ryan Anthony Ramos, 22

The pursuing deputy immediately contacted the California Highway Patrol as the suspect vehicle careened southbound through commuter traffic in areas long under CalTrans flow restrictions and construction at over 100 mph.  The driver of the vehicle, Justin Tyler Steele, 25, veered off the freeway and into the City of Oxnard, where Oxnard Police Department patrol units joined the chase, ultimately bringing the vehicle to a stop in the downtown commercial district.

Steele and his passenger, Ryan Anthony Ramos, 22, quickly alighted from their car and took off running on foot, by which time the Ventura County Sheriff’s Air Patrol helicopter was overhead while Oxnard PD’s K-9 unit arrived on scene.  Shortly thereafter, both Ramos and Steele were taken into custody, transported to Santa Barbara County Jail and booked on charges of felony residential burglary, evading arrest, grand theft, possession of stolen property, and possession of a stolen vehicle.

Both men have since posted bail, which undoubtedly gives great comfort to the residents of Summerland.
