SAN LUIS OBISPO – San Luis Obispo police have arrested a local transient for allegedly grabbing a nine-year-old girl.
According to SLOPD, a San Luis Obispo woman and her two children, ages six and nine, were preparing to cross the street at the intersection of Broad and South streets about 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday.
Police say the nine-year-old girl, who was wearing rollerblades, was standing behind her mother waiting to cross Broad Street when a transient male, later identified as Jaime Hernandez, crossed South St and approached the girl from behind.
As Hernandez passed behind the family he grabbed the nine-year-old girl’s belt loop and pulled her as he continued to walk past the family.
This caused the girl to spin around slightly, but she was able to maintain her balance, pull away, and leave the curb with her family to cross the street.
Police say as the family crossed the street the girl alerted her mother to what happened and they immediately went to Fire Station 1, located on the corner of Broad and South streets, to notify police.
Officers say they responded and obtained the description of the man.
They immediately recognized the description of the man to match that of a transient male, Hernandez, whom they had contacted earlier in the day during a park patrol.
Officers say they searched the area and quickly located Hernandez with the assistance of another citizen.
Hernandez was positively identified as the suspect who grabbed the girl’s belt and was placed under private person’s arrest for battery.
Police say there is nothing to suggest this crime was sexual in nature and at this time they have no other reports of such behavior.
Hernandez was booked at San Luis Obispo County Jail, and is being held without bail for a parole violation. Hernandez is on parole for battery.
