15-hour standoff ends in arrest – various SLO agencies, SWAT, bomb squad called in
A standoff in the Atascadero has ended after 15 hours with the arrest of a 45-year-old man from his barricaded home.
Rudolph Charles Muravez II, 45, who threatened police with an ice pick and machete finally surrendered to authorities at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Thursday without incident, according to police. Muravez was coaxed out of his home by San Luis Obispo County sheriff’s deputies.
“It seems anti-climactic, but it’s the best outcome possible because no one was harmed,” Atascadero police Chief Jerel Haley said.
The home was checked, according to authorities, for other weapons and was cleared of tear gas.
It is unclear what Muravez’ reasoning for barricading his home, but authorities believe an issue with prescription medication may have been a factor.
The standoff began on Wednesday evening at about 11:30 p.m. when Atascadero police officers were summoned to the house located at 5765 Dolores Avenue because a woman called 911 to report domestic abuse. The woman, who police believe is Muravez’ wife escaped with her two children, ages unknown. Police say the children were unharmed and did not disclose the nature of the woman’s injuries to press.
At times there was yelling and according to Atascadero Police Department spokesman Gregg Meyer, the suspect would be seen through the windows, once even naked.
A call went out at 12:30 p.m. for SWAT to be ready to assemble, but the suspect surrendered less than two hours later canceling the need for the elite squad.
Muravez was booked in County Jail on suspicion of three felony charges, including assault with a deadly weapon and false imprisonment. He had an outstanding felony warrant for violation of his probation. He may also face other charges, according to police, but that has not been determined as of press time. He is being held without bail.
