Fairfield teen arrested for alleged carjacking

An 18-year-old Fairfield man was arrested on multiple charges late Saturday night after he allegedly stole a car at gunpoint and tried to flee.

Officers received a call at about 11:35 p.m. that a carjacking had taken place in the 1900 block of West Texas Street while a 20-year-old woman was parking her car.

The woman had been confronted by a man with a handgun, told to get out of her car, then fled the scene, hitting a fire hydrant as he drove away, police said.

Shortly after, the California Highway Patrol received a call and responded to reports that a vehicle had crashed and rolled over on Interstate Highway 80 near North Texas Street.

Officers arriving at the scene determined the rolled over vehicle to be the one previously stolen in the carjacking incident in Fairfield.

The suspect driver got out of the car and ran into a nearby field; he was later identified as Anthony Jesus Torres, 18, of Fairfield, police said.

A CHP helicopter and a canine unit found Torres as he was hiding beneath a tree, police said.

A fake handgun was reportedly found nearby the hiding place of the suspect.

Torres was arrested on charges of carjacking, driving under the influence, and outstanding arrest warrant.

He was taken to a hospital where he was treated for minor injuries he sustained in the crash.
