Dragnet could last in search of cop killer

RIVERSIDE – Police are using road blocks in an ongoing search for a suspect in the fatal shooting of a Riverside police officer on Sunday night.

Officer Ryan Bonaminio was on routine patrol when he stopped a truck driver in connection with a reported hit and run accident near the 60 freeway and Market Street Sunday night, according to Riverside police Chief Sergio Diaz. The hit and run accident was reported at 9:45 p.m. Bonaminio reportedly spotted the truck as it was heading southbound on Market Street from the 60 freeway.

The truck driver fled his cab and Bonaminio gave chase through Fairmount Park. Bonaminio was discovered at 9:52 p.m. by other officers, lying on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to Riverside Community Hospital where he died.

Police said its dragnet includes road blocks along Market Street from south of the 60 freeway to the park, and north of the 60 to Agua Mansa Road.

The California Highway Patrol is listing the subject as “armed and dangerous.”

“He already killed an officer,” the CHP said in a statement.

Estimates stated the road blocks will continue for several hours. Truck drivers in the area have been told to stay in position.

According to both the CHP and Riverside police, no suspect has been identified.

Detectives Ron San Filippo and Greg Rowe are heading the investigation for Riverside police.

Bonaminio was a four-year member of Riverside police, having served in Iraq for the U.S. Army.
