Mother arrested in connection with daughter's death

SACRAMENTO — Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department Child Abuse Bureau detectives recently obtained an arrest warrant for 40-year-old Mia Holmes, 4941 Stamas Lane No. 2, Fair Oaks, the mother of 3-year-old Valeeya Brazile, whose death earlier this year was determined to be a homicide.

According to a press release from Sgt. Tim Curran, sheriff’s spokesman, Holmes surrendered to deputies at the Sacramento County Main Jail. Holmes was booked on the charges of endangering the life of a child and possession of marijuana for sale. Both charges are connected to Brazile’s death and a result of the ongoing homicide investigation.

On Feb. 5, 2008, Brazile was driven to a local hospital by Holmes, Holmes’ fiancé Thomas Martin, and Martin’s grandmother after she was found in her bedroom unresponsive. She was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival.  An autopsy ruled the death a homicide.

Martin was arrested for Brazile’s murder in June and remains in custody at the main jail. Holmes was arraigned on Nov. 6.
