Yolo County auto theft suspect charged with multiple felonies

“(Woodland, CA) – May 18, 2020 – Woodland man Kenneth Smit, age 23, has been charged with multiple felonies by the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office after being arrested by Woodland Police on May 14, 2020.  Smit had been previously arrested on May 7, 2020, for auto theft and was released as a result of  California Judicial Council’s Statewide Emergency “0” Bail Schedule.  The “0” Bail Schedule became effective April 13, 2020, in response to the COVID-19
pandemic.

Three criminal complaints were filed on May 18, 2020.  The first charges Smit with a felony violation of theft of a vehicle on May 7, 2020.  A second complaint alleges on May 14, 2020, after his release from jail due to the “0” Bail Schedule, Smit committed the following crimes: Second degree burglary, looting, and misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance and possession of controlled substance paraphernalia.  Both felony complaints allege that Smit has three
prior strike convictions.  A third complaint alleges a misdemeanor violation of possession of burglary tools from April 16, 2020.

Smit is on parole after having been sentenced on June 10, 2015, in Yolo County to three years in state prison.  Smit was arraigned on the complaints today in Department 1 of the Yolo County Superior Court. He entered not guilty pleas and is being held at the Yolo County jail on $25,000 bail on the felonies.  His next court date is May 29, 2020, in Department 14 of the Yolo County Superior Court.”
