Redding man accused of fatally stabbing his mother

A man has been arrested on suspicion of fatally stabbing his mother last week in Redding.

Just before 4:30 PM on April 10, police were dispatched to the 1100 block of Edgewood Drive for a what started out as a medical call but turned out to be a crime.

At the scene, officers found 68-year-old Joan McKenzie suffering from stab wounds. She later died of her injuries at a local hospital.

Dispatch had also put out a description of the suspect, who was detained near the scene and identified as the victim’s son, 32-year-old Nicholas McKenzie. No apparent motive has been disclosed as of yet.

He was arrested on suspicion of murder and booked at the Shasta County Jail on $1M bond.
