Two homeless individuals from Anaheim have been arrested in relation to a beating that led to the death of Gilbert Daisaku Johnson, a homeless man who had previously lived in Costa Mesa.

The suspects, 30-year-old Daniel Salazar and 20-year-old Kaitlyn Stewart, were arrested in Anaheim on November 16th, six months after the incident.

A passerby had noticed Johnson on the ground and “suffering from head injuries,” said Sgt. Jacob Gallacher.  He was located in the 100 block of West Broadway in Anaheim at about 3:45 AM on November 15, 2021.  The individual reported the observation to police, who had him transported to a hospital for his injuries.  Johnson received treatment over the next few days but did not survive.  He passed away on November 18th.

Over the next six months, Anaheim homicide detectives worked to locate the perpetrators of the murder and were able to identify Salazar and Stewart as murder suspects.  Salazar was arrested in the 100 block of North Lemon Street, and Stewart was arrested in the 300 block of West Center Street Promenade.

“Both suspects were booked into the Anaheim Detention Facility. Salazar was booked for murder and is being held in lieu of $1 million. Stewart was booked for robbery and is being held in lieu of $50,000,” said Sgt. Gallagher.  “Detectives are asking anyone with information to contact them via OC Crime Stoppers at 855-TIP-OCCS or occrimestoppers.org.”
