Woman dies in burning van. no foul play suspected

“Just after 2 PM today, a Deputy with our office was contacted by a CHP Officer who requested the Deputies assistance with investigating a report of a suspicious van. Two Deputies and two CHP Officers responded to the area of Highway 70 and Old Highway near Keddie.

Upon arrival they located the Dodge van belonging to Kathleen “Kathy” Griffin of Reno, NV, who had previously been reported missing out of Reno.

Deputies opened the van and discovered a small fire in the rear compartment. Deputies requested a response from Quincy Fire and began to extinguish the fire. After the fire was extinguished Deputies discovered a female matching the description of the missing person, deceased inside the van. Sheriff’s Instigators responded to the scene and were able to positively identify the deceased at Kathleen Griffin.

After a comprehensive investigation of the scene no foul play was suspected.

The cause of the fire and cause of Kathleen’s death has not yet been determined. A complete autopsy will be performed by the Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death.

We would like to offer our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Kathleen and will do everything we can to help support them through this difficult time.

Our office would also like to thank the Reno Police Department for all their assistance.”
