Investigators Seek Public Assistance After Initial DNA Comparisons Fail to Yield Match in Agua Fria Human Remains Discovery

MARIPOSA COUNTY, CA — The Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office has released a case update regarding the ongoing investigation into human remains recovered off Agua Fria Road over the summer.

Deputies initially located the remains in an area adjacent to the roadway on July 26, 2026. Following the recovery, sheriff’s detectives partnered with the California Department of Justice’s Missing and Unidentified Persons Unit to establish an identity.

Forensic genetic analysis confirmed that the deceased is an adult male. State DOJ analysts processed DNA samples collected from the remains and conducted cross-comparisons against genetic profiles connected to local missing persons cases, as well as statewide databases across California. The initial screening did not produce a match, leaving the individual’s identity undetermined.

Sheriff’s officials stated that the case remains active and that additional specialized forensic testing alongside investigative follow-up will proceed.

Detectives are asking anyone who may possess information that could assist in identifying the individual or aiding the investigation to contact Detective Caleb Collins at (209) 966-3615.
