A Mariposa man accused of ambushing a deputy during the service of a restraining order has been arrested.

On the night of August 28, a deputy attempted to serve an out-of-state restraining order on the 4000 block of Dawn Road when Douglas Popke (69) allegedly ambushed him with a rifle. The deputy returned fire, striking Popke at least once.

Popke initially fled the area, prompting authorities to issue a temporary shelter-in-place order.

However, Popke was located and taken into custody by the end of the night. The Sheriff’s Department has since released video of the incident.
