TEHAMA COUNTY, CA — “We are warning the public about a scam involving text messages claiming there is a problem with an Apple Pay payment or purchase. Many of the recipients do not even use Apple Pay.
The messages include a phone number and link to contact for assistance. When victims call, scammers request personal information, including date of birth and the last four digits of their Social Security number. They may also instruct victims to download apps that could install spyware or allow access to information on their phones. Victims are then asked to log in to online banking to “fix” their accounts, potentially exposing their financial information.
**How to protect yourself:**
– NEVER click links or call phone numbers provided in these messages.
– NEVER share personal information, banking credentials, or verification codes with unsolicited callers.
– Contact your bank directly using the number on your bank card or its official website to verify suspicious activity.
– If you shared information or installed an app, contact your bank immediately, change compromised passwords from a trusted device, and secure your phone.
– Consider freezing your credit with all three major credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.
**Remember:** Do not trust unexpected messages claiming there is a problem with your account. Verify everything through official channels.”
