Forensic DNA Evidence Leads to Arrest in 2011 Anaheim Cold Case Homicide
ANAHEIM, CA — Anaheim Police Department Homicide Detectives have arrested a suspect in connection with the murder of an 80-year-old resident following a cold case investigation lasting more than 14 years.
The original investigation began on Dec. 15, 2011, when officers conducted a welfare check at the Anaheim apartment of Il Jae Kim and located him deceased inside the residence. Detectives conducted an extensive investigation at the time, but the case ultimately went cold after leads were exhausted.
In March 2026, APD homicide detectives partnered with the Orange County Crime Lab to re-examine evidence collected from the original crime scene. Utilizing updated forensic DNA technology, forensic analysts identified Mike Nunez, of Santa Ana as a suspect in the homicide.
On Oct. 6, 2026, detectives located and arrested Nunez in Santa Ana. The Orange County District Attorney’s Office has formally charged Nunez with murder.
Department officials stated that the investigation remains active. Authorities urge anyone with additional information regarding the case or the suspect to contact the Anaheim Police Department at (714) 321-3669 or submit an anonymous tip through Orange County Crime Stoppers at (855) TIP-OCC.
