A Santa Barbara County jail inmate has been charged with the murder following an
assault that allegedly led to the death of another prisoner.
According to Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department Public Information Officer
Raquel Zick, the assault at approximately 6:30 a.m. September 6 in a dayroom at the county’s Main Jail.
The victim, 68-year-old James Edward Murphy, did not initially report that he had been injured.
Another inmate, Santa Barbara resident Peter James Anderson, 46, reported an injury to his hand.
Deputies questioned Anderson about how he had been hurt and began investigating.
They then located Murphy and discovered that he also had injuries.
Murphy was transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, where he remained for two
days. After his discharge Sept. 8, he returned to the Main Jail. Two days later, he was
transferred to the Santa Barbara County Northern Branch Jail.
At approximately 12:14 p.m. September 15, a custody deputy conducting a routine
check found Murphy unresponsive inside his cell. Jail personnel and medical staff
began lifesaving efforts, which were continued by responding emergency crews.
Murphy was pronounced dead at approximately 12:59 p.m.
The September 6 assault was already under criminal investigation when Murphy’s
death was first announced. Details about the incident were withheld at that time
as detectives were still working on the case.
An autopsy conducted determined that Murphy died from heart disease, with blunt force
trauma listed as a contributing factor.
Based on the investigation and autopsy findings,
Anderson was booked while still in custody on additional felony charges of murder and
elder abuse. He remains in custody at the Main Jail on a no-bail hold.
