Man Fatally Shot in Officer-Involved Incident Following Armed Standoff in Woodland
WOODLAND, CA – A man died following an officer-involved shooting after an armed standoff at a residence early Monday afternoon, according to the Woodland Police Department.
Dispatchers received a 911 call at 2:02 p.m. from family members inside a home reporting that a male relative was armed with a firearm, appeared to be experiencing a mental health crisis, and was possibly suicidal. Woodland Police Department officers arrived on the scene within five minutes, safely evacuated the family members from the home, and gathered preliminary information.
Members of the Woodland Police Department Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) alongside co-responders from the Yolo County Health and Human Services Agency established telephone communication with the man in an effort to de-escalate the situation and arrange a safe surrender.
Approximately 21 minutes after officers arrived on scene, personnel heard a gunshot from inside the residence, followed by a second gunshot six minutes later and a third gunshot five minutes after that. At 3:08 p.m., the man opened the front door and discharged three rounds outside into the neighborhood. In response to the active threat, officers evacuated adjacent homes and advised surrounding residents to shelter in place while negotiation efforts continued.
The man subsequently exited the home holding a firearm. According to department officials, officers issued commands for him to drop the weapon. When he did not comply, an officer-involved shooting occurred.
Officers and emergency medical personnel immediately administered aid, but the man died at the scene from his injuries. No officers, family members, or bystanders were injured during the incident.
In accordance with the Yolo County Protocol for Response to Officer Involved Critical Incidents, the Davis Police Department has assumed the independent investigation into the shooting. The involved Woodland police officers have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the inquiry.
